Cheetah cubs are highly vulnerable to predation by other large carnivores. They are weaned at around four months and are independent by around 20 months of age. The cheetah is threatened by habitat loss, conflict with humans, poaching and high susceptibility to diseases.

Newborn Cubs. After a gestation period of 90-98 days, the female cheetah gives birth to her cubs. She will usually have between 3-5 cubs per litter but can sometimes have as many as 9. The mother cheetah will take care of the cubs by herself without the male.

Cheetah cubs have a thick silvery-grey mantle down their back. The mantle helps camouflage the cubs by imitating the look of an aggressive animal called a honey badger. This mimicry may help deter predators such as lions, hyenas, and eagles from attempting to kill them.
