Cape Poge Lighthouse (sometimes also spelled “Cape Pogue”) is situated at the northeast corner of the small island of Chappaquiddick, just east of Martha’s Vineyard. Today, most visitors arrive on Chappaquiddick aboard the On Time , a ferry that links the island to downtown Edgartown.

Cape Poge light, 4 miles outside, is the guide to the harbor, so that the light on the breakwater requires to be of very little magnitude; yet I found the same number of lamps burning here as in the most exposed situations in the district.

The Overfalls Lightship Station was located near the mouth of Delaware Bay, roughly three miles east of Cape Henlopen and 8.5 miles southwest of Cape May, and marked the Overfalls Shoal where the shallowest spot had a depth of only ten feet.

Three lighthouses have been built just offshore on Smith Island to mark this important cape. The foundations for the first two now lie hidden beneath the sea, victims of the unstable shoreline of Smith Island, but the third Cape Charles Lighthouse, a fully automated skeletal tower, still serves mariners from its island home.
