Blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) are the largest animals that have ever lived on Earth, bigger even than the largest dinosaurs. Despite this, the whales weren't "discovered" in Australian waters until about 20 years ago. Globally, blue whales were reduced to 3 per cent of their original population size through whaling.
